American Cross

A story of America's painful birth

1775 marked the beginning of Americas first civil war. Not the war between the North and the South, but the war we call the American Revolution. In this ironic revolution, those who wanted to break away from their lawfully constituted government were called "Patriots" while those who remained loyal in the face of overwhelming opposition were labeled "Traitors".

"American Cross" focuses on Thomas Cross, born July 4th, 1776 to a wealthy farming family. Though Loyalists, Thomas’ parents sit out the war (like most people did), choosing not to fight. In 1783, as the British are finally defeated and marching out of America to Canada, seven year old Thomas sees his entire family slaughtered and their farm and money seized by greedy men intent on stealing the Cross family’s wealth for themselves. Passing the slaughter off as the work of over-enthusiastic revolutionaries, these local politicians, merchants and renegade lawmen escape the blame for their foul deed… but there is one problem with their plans: Thomas has survived, and he knows who the guilty men are.

Thomas is rescued by a British rifle regiment which is retreating to Canada. Adopted by the Colonel who rescues him, he finds a new home amongst the rank and file of Britain’s defeated army. From this moment on, Thomas throws himself into military matters, becoming one of the Empire's leading soldiers, intent on one thing only: revenge on America and those who killed his family.

Thomas Cross; born on a Monday, orphaned on a Tuesday, enlisted on a Wednesday, battled on a Thursday, promoted on a Friday, revenged on a Saturday, and elected on a Sunday.

Yeah, this is way more boring than two idiots in spandex hitting one another.

Okay, so the story's great and the art kicks ass. Now here's what every single comic book company says when I pitch them this comic: "Hmm, doesn't sound like it would sell." Oh. Like the Mel Gibson film "The Patriot" didn't sell? I'd settle for a third of those sales. This is just another example of the American comic book industry being scared of its own shadow.
